RODBT is recommended for people who may be struggling with a variety of difficulties or symptoms that are interfering with life. This means that someone seeking RODBT may be looking to work on more than one “problem area” at a time and/or it means that group participants might notice that others in the group are working on improvements in areas that are different than their own.
Sometimes people will enter a treatment program designed to help all the members of a group to achieve results according to a “symptom profile”. This means that if you have an anxiety disorder you go to anxiety treatment, and if you have depression you go to depression treatment, then those who struggle with eating go to eating treatment, substance misuse to substance misuse treatment, etc. etc.
This can be highly problematic to “pick a program” or to somehow “order” and “prioritize” the struggles in your life – particularly if you find they sometimes shift around.
Instead of grouping participants this way, RODBT seeks to help those who find that their life circumstances seem highly related to this idea of being “over-controlled”. We contend that sometimes you can have too much of a “good thing” and that what RODBT offers, can help to reduce “symptoms” that show up in a variety of ways.
In order for the treatment to work best, it is important that there is a goodness of fit. It would not be advisable to apply this treatment to someone who is prone to be “under-controlled” and who would benefit from learning how to tolerate distress, and how to temper impulsive behaviours.
Before being accepted for this treatment, it is important to know if there is a good fit.
